2017: 4 Clubs and a Putter (26.4.)

Few clubs but lots of bottles

The  weather provided a perfect day for golf with lots of sun and almost no wind. Most members were a little concerned about the format of today's "fun" competition. Only 4 clubs and a putter were allowed....nine clubs less than usual! In fact, great scores were returned by at least a third of the 32 members and the one guest who played. Perhaps many of us play with far too many clubs and choice and indecision is our downfall. Certainly today's competition meant that we had to keep focused and concentrate on the course rather than on club selection.
Our Captain, Gordon, returned from holiday to take over the helm once again and had clearly enjoyed his break. He announced prizes not only for the usual twos on par threes but also for birdies he sponsored on all other holes. A very generous gesture.
Our President, Neville, also returned today from a stay in England. It was good to see him back and playing with us again.
Jan Boultbee won the competition with an excellent 40 points. Her club selection was Driver, 5 wood, 7 iron and pitching wedge and her tactic was to avoid bunkers at all costs! Clearly this strategy paid off. Nino Aloras came second with 38 points which was achieved by playing to par on the back nine and a birdie on hole 13 where he chipped in from 20 metres. His club selection was Driver, 5 wood, 8 iron and 52 degrees wedge. There was a tie for 3rd place between Graham Sutton and Bob Crow. Both scoring 37 points but Bob had the better back nine and won 3rd place.
Next week is medal week and 14 clubs can return to our bags. We will not be having a meal to follow the golf as is our usual custom because we go on our away trip on 14th May when we will be having several meals together.
