2020: Away Day/Monthly Medal (2./ 9.12)

Winners Monthly Medal

Venues:  Bonalba Golf & Spa & El Plantio

Medal play was postponed from the first Wednesday in the month to this week as we were able to go ahead with the previously planned Away Day on the 2nd December.

Today, back on home ground, we had prize giving for the two competitions.

Our Medal competition was attended by 25 members and 1 guest.   To reduce playing time, the chosen format was maximum double score.  This is slightly more forgiving than full stroke play as the maximum score on each hole is double par. You could argue that this favours the higher handicapper as there are no double figure scores of 11 and above, which occasionally would happen.

Congratulations to everyone on the winners’ board for some excellent results where everyone scored below par.

The summary of the results are as follows:

Nearest the pins:

Hole 4    (hcp 22+)        Pascale Leroux

Hole 8    (hcp 22+)        Chris van Bemmelen

Hole 11   (hcp 0-21)      Greta Biersteker

Hole 14   (hcp 0-21)      Michael Davison (very nearly a hole in one)

There were 3 birdies:  on hole 4 from Pascale, on hole 11 from Brian Hines and on hole 14 , surprise, surprise, from Michael.

The main competition results were:

5th place with a net score of 71 off 30 hcp – Graham Sutton

4th place with a net score of 69 off 33 hcp – Doris Shearman-Earp

3rd place with a net score off 26 hcp  – Brian Hines

2nd place with a net score of 68 off 25 hcp – Pascale Leroux, with a better back 9

1st place with a net score of 67 of 23 hcp  – James Burnet

Last week we had the pleasure of playing at El Plantio.  It had been a while since we played an Away Day on this course, so this made a nice change.  The course was in good condition with fast greens, so putting was a bit of a challenge.  We had a good turnout of 26 members and 3 guests competing for a number of prizes with generous sponsorship from Bill Williams.  We played a team game of three best Stableford scores and, in addition, there were prizes for the four best individual scores.

The summary of the results are as follows:

Guest prize – Elsie Buczko

Hole 7            Richard Davis

Hole 9            Richard Davis

Hole 14          Greta Biersteker

2020: Indiv. Stableford (28.10.) and Monthly Medal (4.11.)

Venue:  Bonalba Golf & Spa

Winners 28.10.20

The competition on Wednesday, 28 October was Individual Stableford which qualified for all ongoing Society competitions and also for the Worldwide Handicap.  29 cards were processed on Master Scoreboard, and in addition, we welcomed one guest, Trish from Cork in Ireland.  Trish has now been playing with our Society a few times and is hoping to become a member in the new year.

There were some very good results today, the first five scores were par and better and just over half the players came in with over 30 points.

Edi Rogers, whose putting skills are never in doubt, proved it once again by making two birdies on the par 3’s. Interestingly, he did not birdie the one hole where he was nearest to the pin.  The pins were dominated by Stan who was nearest on both par 3’s on the front 9. His good play carried on, finishing third overall, just ahead of Jean-Paul. Pascale, his wife, did one better and tied with Doris for the top two places. Greta, who is hardly ever out of the top group, was making up 5th place.

Congratulations to everyone on the winners’ board, and even if I say so myself – well played!

The summary of the results is as follows:

Nearest the pins:

Hole 4            Stan Tarabula.

Hole 8            Stan Tarabula

Hole 11          Jean-Louis Moucheboeuf

Hole 14          Edi Rogers

3rd place with 37 points off 23 hcp  – Stan Tarabula, with a better back 9

2nd place with 39 points off 27 hcp – Pascale Leroux

1st place with 39 points of 33 hcp  – Doris Shearman-Earp, beating Pascale on the last 6 holes

On this Wednesday, the first one in November, we continued, as per calendar, with our Monthly Medal competitions.  22 members and 2 guests were competing.  The weather forecast was for rain and even thunder, but luckily, apart from a light shower at the beginning of our round, it stayed dry with very pleasant temperatures.

Congratulations to Jim Hurley, our winner today.  It was very close for 2nd, 3rd and 4th place and the places had to be decided from the scores on the back 9.  This week it was Erik Paesmans who putted well, adding two par 3 birdies to his very good score. Greta had the best gross score of 80.

The summary of the results this week are:

PLEASE REMEMBER, NEXT WEDNESDAY IS CAPTAIN'S DAY

2020: Monthly Medal (7.10.)

Venue:  Bonalba Golf & Spa, 7 October 2020

This Wednesday we had our first Medal competition since lockdown, as we are gradually reverting to our calendar which our Captain put together at the beginning of his reign.

He is also now planning to have his Captain’s Day on 11 November, but because of the ongoing Corona restrictions, there will sadly not be the formal Captain’s Dinner Dance.  However, he is planning to have a lunch and prize presentation on the Wednesday after the Captains competition.

Following our calendar, next week we are looking forward to our first Away Day for this year which will be at Font del Llop.

Today we had an attendance of 28 members and one guest, enjoying their round of golf in perfect weather conditions, with temperatures in the mid to high twenties.  The top five results were all under par and there was some very good putting, with 6 players scoring a two.  Congratulations to all the winners for their excellent results.

You might have missed at the Club the ever cheerful presence of Edi Rogers.  He is now recovering from his heart problems and is hoping to be back to play next week at Font del LLop.  Our very best wishes for a continued speedy recovery.

The summary of the competitions was as follows:

Nearest the pins:

2020: Monthly Medal (4.3.)

Venue:  Bonalba Golf & Spa, 4 March 2020

Today we competed for the March Medal.  It did not seem long since we played our February Medal. In fact, this was only two weeks ago due to re-scheduling.  We played Double Par Maximum Score, so the stress level was slightly lower than playing full Stroke Play and it helped with the overall playing time. The attendance today was 33 members and one guest from France.
The very stormy weather conditions which prevailed on Monday with gusts of up to 90km per hour, had fortunately improved, but it was still quite blustery and playing conditions were such that the course played one stroke more difficult, with the winning score being a net 73. I don’t normally like to blow my own trumpet, but well played Doris!  Also, congratulations to Pascale, Dave, Jan and Michael for their places on the winners’ board.

There was some excitement on hole 14 today when Brian Wakely scored a hole-in-one.  His ball pitched in the rough and then proceeded to run forward, straight into the hole.  Back in the club house, there were congratulations all round and we toasted Brian with a glass of cava.  Brian’s accuracy on the par 3’s was in top form, as he was also nearest to the pin on hole 4!

At prize giving, the Captain reminded everyone that, as the course is very busy and extra tee times are hard to come by, it is important to put your name down on Master Scoreboard, well in advance, to make sure of a place in any competition you want to enter.  There is also the facility to cancel your entry, if necessary.

Summarizing the results:
Nearest the pins:,
Hole 4                               Brian Wakely
Hole 8                               John Garnett
Hole 11                             Pascale Leroux
Hole 14                             Brian Wakely (in one)
There was a two and a one today.  John Garnett converted his nearest to the pin into a birdie and Brian, on hole 14, did not even have to put to receive his customary golf ball.

The results of the main competition were:
5th place with a net 76 off 11 hcp – Michael Davison
4th place with a net 76 off 23 hcp – Jan Boultbee, with a better back 9
3rd place with a net 75 off 14 hcp – Dave Tomlins
2nd place with a net 74 off 24 hcp – Pascale Leroux
1st place with a net 73 off 30 hcp  – Doris Shearman-Earp

2020: Monthly Medal (8.1.)

Venue:  Bonalba Golf & Spa, 8 January 2020

This was our first Wednesday back after the Festive Season and we were raring to go and play our Monthly Medal, double score format.  Although some of our regular players had not yet returned from their Christmas break, we had a good turn-out of 31 members and 1 guest.
It was a busy day today on Bonalba Golf Course. Looking around the practice area on tee 1, it was interesting to see the attire of different players and how they viewed the weather conditions.  Some, wearing shorts, obviously regarded this morning’s weather as quite warm, while others wore woolly hats, warm trousers and quilted jackets.

It is never easy to get a good golf swing going when you are wearing multiple layers of clothing.  Temperatures did rise later in the morning though, enabling us to swing more freely and some respectable scores were achieved.  Congratulations to everyone on the winners’ list.  Special congratulations goes to the winner, our President Gordon, the only player who broke net par.  Keep up your good form, Gordon and keep knocking in those putts.  Commiserations to Eddy Fagg, who, on hole 14, was done out of a hole-in-one, and of course our members out of a free drink, when his ball landed literally 2 inches from the hole.

Many thanks to David Payne for being in charge of today’s rota duty.

4th place with a net 74 off 27 hcp – Luc Verhaegen, beating Mo on the back 9
