2026: St. Patrick's Day Competition (18.3.)

Venue:  Bonalba Golf & Spa

This Wednesday we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, a yearly competition sponsored very generously by our Irish friends, Jim and Kate Hurley.

As always, it was a fun day enjoyed by 31 members and 5 guests.  The format was a qualifying Individual Stableford.  There were lots of prizes.  The main competition counted for members only, but the other prizes were open to everyone.

A special mention goes to Jean-Jaques Lavergne who achieved nearest the pin on hole 14, one of the longer par 3’s, which was no mean feast, considering his proud age of 89, beating all the “youngster” in the competition.

The weather was kind to us. We enjoyed nice temperatures and sitting in the sun by the food trucks after golf and before heading to the Bonalba Hotel for the presentation lunch.

At the prize giving, Jim and Kate made a special mention and presented a bottle of champagne to one of our Society’s long-standing members and previous Captain, Graham Sutton, who recently celebrated his 80thbirthday.

Again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Graham. You don’t look a day over ……. (the number is up to everyone  )

Venue:  Bonalba Golf & Spa, 30.4.25

Today’s competition was sponsored by our Dutch friends Marcel Barink and Marko van den Berg, to celebrate “Koningsdag” (King’s Day) which is an important festivity in Holland.  27 players took part in this fun format of “Last Man (or Woman) Standing” where everybody played off scratch and indicated how far they got on the course by marking it with their orange flag.

The first flag was put down on the tee of the 15th hole and the majority of the flags were placed on the 17thhole.  Karen, the overall winner, was on the 18th green, one short putt away from the hole.

Everybody entered into the spirit of the day by wearing the Dutch national colour of orange and we all enjoyed the magnificent orange decorations on the club terrace.

We were also treated to a Half Way House, thanks to Andrea and Ellen, the wives of Marcel and Marko.

Prior to prize giving we were treated to a celebratory sparkling cocktail.  There were plenty of prizes and also a raffle of popular Dutch goodies.

We toasted and gave a vote of thanks to Marcel and Marko for their great effort and generosity in making this a truly memorable competition.

Venue:  Bonalba Golf & Spa

This Wednesday was scheduled as the annual “Christmas Present Day” where everyone was bringing a present for each other.  We all did bring presents, but these were as part of the Three Kings’ Toys Appeal for the children of families who were so badly affected by the DANA floods in the Valencia region.

It was also the “Heyens Farewell Event”. Robert and Lief are moving away and they sponsored today’s competition.  The format was a qualifying Individual Stableford.  23 members took part, on this wintery cold day.  Congratulations to all the winners.  Looking at the scores, Division 1 had it over Division 2 this week with some very good results.

All the best to Robert and Lief

After the prize giving, we stayed on to a glass of cava and some tapas, toasting a fond farewell to Robert and Lief and thanking them for their support and commitment to the Society, with Robert being a previous Captain and Lief in her role of Treasurer.  We wish them the very best in their new home.  They will be sadly missed.

It was great to see Helmut Treiber and his wife Beate joining us in the farewell to Robert and Lief, and we are all looking forward to Helmut’s speedy return to golf.

As always, it was a fun day enjoyed by 35 members and 6 guests.  The format was a non-qualifying Individual Stableford.  There were lots of prizes.  The main competition counted for members only, but the other prizes were open to everyone.

Playing his first game as a member was Pascal Guy, who is also the President of the French-European Amigos Golf Society.  We hope, he will have many enjoyable games in our Society, starting with today’s win.

The weather played its part to making it a very enjoyable round of golf.  Luckily, the recent strong winds had finally changed into a light brise.

After golf, 47 members and guests attended an Irish themed lunch in the Club restaurant, during which the prizes were presented.

For the main course, we enjoyed a tasty Irish Stew or Fish and Chips and finished, for those who wanted it, with an Irish Coffee, also generally sponsored by Jim and Kate.

The Irish music during lunch, later encouraged some members to try out Irish dancing, expertly taught by Kate.  And, as on many previous occasions, we persuaded our resident singer, Graham, to give us his rendition of “Danny Boy” and encouraged us to all join in.

We were delighted to welcome to the lunch Keith and Pauline Preston, two of the founder members of our Society.  Keith, now in his nineties and still going strong, had only recently stopped playing golf.
