2023: President/Captain's Day (18.10.)

Today we had a special occasion.  It was a combined President/Captain’s Day.  We had 35 players in total competing for various prizes and the two trophies.  The Division 1 players competed for the Captain’s Trophy and Division 2 for the President’s Trophy.  

The format was Individual Stableford qualifying for handicap adjustments.  No doubt, some handicaps will come down as the winning scores were excellent, better than par.

 

Congratulations to all the players in the prizes and especially to Michael and Jean-Paul, the winners of the Trophies.

2022: President's Trophy (21.9.)

Venue:  Bonalba Golf & Spa, 21.9.22

 

This Wednesday was President’s Day.  It was good to see a full turn-out of 36 members to compete for the President’s Trophy.  We played Single Stableford “with a twist” which did not qualify for the usual Society competitions.  

 

The twist was that the points on every third hole counted double, so par was 48 points.  However, some of the double-counting holes had good potential for net birdies and looking at the results, the winners took good advantage of that.  

Chris, the overall winner of the President’s Trophy, experienced one of those days of golf when everything was going your way.  Many congratulations to Chris and also to the best two players of Division 1 and 2, Ernst, Jan, Ignace and Brian.

 

To thank everyone who had turned out but were not in the prizes, the President decided to give away 6 raffle prizes.

 

I would like to thank Richard for his kind words about my Presidency and the presentation of a selection of my favourite tipple, Cava.

 

After prize giving, 44 members and guests sat down for a very enjoyable tapas lunch on the terrace of Bonalba Club.

2018: President's Day 4 Clubs and a Putter (26.9.)

 Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 26 September 2018

32 members and 7 guests were delighted to take part in this year’s President’s Day. Neville, our President, decided to give us a bit of a different challenge in choosing the format of 4 clubs and a putter.  This format seemed to suit some of the players as their selection of clubs enabled them to score well.  However, there was a chance that your choice of clubs did not serve you well and therefore the President decided to also award a consolation prize for the player who had the most trouble.

There were an abundance of prizes sponsored by our President Neville but even if you were not in the prizes, we were all in for a treat at half-way house enjoying the delicious savouries and cakes provided by Sandra and Heather and ably assisted by Pauline.

The prize giving took place in the Club House where we were treated by Neville and Sandra to a glass or two of Cava and we gave a toast to our President and his wife thanking them for their continued support and generosity and wish them well.

We finished the afternoon with a very enjoyable meal at the Restaurant Els Foguers de Pablo in El Campello.

2016: Presidents Day (27.4.)

This Wednesday we had the President’s Day Competition with the prizes being presented at the Dinner on the following Friday, the trophies and prizes generously sponsored by our Captain Neville Woodfine and his wife Sandra.  There was again a full house with 42 members playing Individual Stableford and some very good results were recorded but one result stood out especially. Rob Ritchie had a score of 42 points which, at his playing handicap of 6, meant that he played to scratch. Very well done, Rob, a fantastic result!  However, as players needed to attend the Dinner to qualify for prizes, Rob unfortunately missed out on a prize.

Us lesser players were spurned on by looking forward to the refreshments at half-way house offering delicious pies, quiches and cakes which were made by Sandra and Heather. Thank you ladies, you are amazing cooks. Thanks also goes Pauline and Hazel assisting the President at the half-way house.

The Presentation Dinner the following Friday at La Villa Chinese Restaurant, Campello was well supported with over 60 members and guests attending. Special mention and thanks go those members who played their last League Match at Oliva Nova against the French Connection on that day and who managed to attend the Dinner despite the rush to get back in time. There were happy faces as by drawing with the French Connection, they secured first place, which means that they are returning to the First Division.  Congratulations to all the participating members and to John Garnett, our Competition Secretary who organised the teams.

Thank you also to Santi Hung and his team at La Villa Restaurant for serving us with plenty of delicious Chinese food and drink.

2015: Presidents Day (7. & 10.)

On Wednesday the 7^th we played the Presidents Day competition which was Individual Stableford with the Presentation Dinner on the following Saturday the 10^th at the restaurant La Villa in El Campello.  All prizes for this day were sponsored by our President, Neville Woodfine. In addition, on competition day we were treated to “half-way house” with a spread of delicious savouries and cakes laid on by Neville’s wife Sandra.  In fact, that was the highlight of the day for some of us who were struggling with the golf and were tucking into the meat and potato pie amongst other things.

The President had stipulated that only those players who supported Presidents Day by attending the presentation dinner would be eligible for a prize and our congratulations go to the following winners:

2014: Presidents Day Trophy (1.10.)

Today’s event was the Annual Presidents Competition, and following the atrocious weather conditions of recent  days understandably areas of the course were rather wet despite the excellent efforts of ground staff who worked tirelessly to ensure all mud was removed from the course. Following inspection by our President Jeff Murten, who must have then had a word with the man upstairs requesting a rain free day, he declared that the day’s event would be played but modified, and take the form of a Stableford competition with Trophies awarded for the first three places, all par three holes, and a special prize for the closest to the line on the 18^th hole. Everyone was on time and the first of 32 players set of just before 9am. Even though buggies were only allowed on paths everyone returned in good time. Before presenting trophies to the lucky winners the President thanked all those who assisted him in ensuring the day’s event went well, then read out a comical golf poem of several verses which set the scene for the following presentation.

Peter Van Der Mee came home in 3^rd place, just behind Santi Hung in 2^nd, but the overall winner of the President’s 2014 Trophy was Michael Davison, all winners received beautiful trophies presented by the President Jeff Murten with the overall winner Michael having the additional honour of his name being added to the President’s Trophy which is retained in the Trophy cabinet at Bonalba Golf.

2013: President's Day (16.10.)

Venue : Bonalba Golf &Spa, Wednesday,16th October 2013.

Today was President’s Day.  Our President, Jeff Murton, presented us all with a Titleist ball before we started our round of Stableford.  Everybodyl enjoyed this day “with a difference”.  In order that the results stayed secret until the prize giving, Jeff and his wife Caroline attended the two par 3’s on the front nine  which were nominated for nearest to pin and also the 15th and 18th hole where we had to drive “nearest to the rope” .  The weather also played its part  to add to this very pleasant day with summer temperatures reaching the 30’s.  Directly after the golf, we had the prize giving and all winners were presented with magnificent crystal trophies.  The overall winner, Chris van Bemmelen, will also have his name engraved on the silver Presidents Trophy which stays in the club house.  However, on this day he was able to hold it and he proudly paraded it around the meeting room.  Well done Chris!

To round off the day, Jeff had arranged to have dinner at the beautiful restaurant “MISTER X” at El Planet, Altea.  About 25 of us were able to attend and enjoy a delicious meal served by very attentive and friendly staff.  Jeff very kindly donated the wine to go with the meal, followed by some more complimentary drinks from the restaurant.  So all in all a jolly evening.  Thank you, Mr. President!
