2023: Monthly Medal (1.2.)

Venue:  Bonalba Golf & Spa

Today was the first competition under the new Captain Richard Davis.  His proposal for 2023 is on the blog under “Announcements”.

Being the first Wednesday in the month, 24 members competed for the February Medal (Maximum Score) which qualified for handicap and Society competitions.

A special mention and congratulations to Jan for an outstanding round of golf.

For today’s competition there were only 2 nearest the pin prizes, in consideration of the budget for 2023.  However, from next week we are again awarding 4 nearest the pin, 2 of which will now be sponsored by Brian Hines and Graham Sutton.  Thank you to Brian and Graham for their kind generosity.

Another change is that Bob Crow, who previously sponsored the 2’s on the par 3, is now going to sponsor “best 9 holes” which can be best back 9, front 9, or selected 9 holes as per the decision on the day.  However, we will continue to announce the twos achieved.

The summary of today’s competition is as follows:

Best back 9 – Moe Farouky with a net 33.

Nearest the pin:

Hole 4            Michael Davison

Hole 8            Richard Davis

Today there were no twos recorded.

Medal Competition:

1st Division:

Runner up with a net 72 off 15 hcp – Helmut Treiber

1st place with a net 71 off 11 hcp – Richard Davis

2nd Division:

2014: Monthly Medal (3.12.)

1st, 2nd and 4th under the Xmas tree
Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 3 December 2014

Today we played our last medal of the year. We had a full capacity turn-out of 37 members and 5 guests.  The weather was kind to us after having had quite a bit of rain lately.  Congratulations to Stephen who is in top form and followed up his win on Captains Day with winning the medal today.  Commiserations go to David who narrowly missed out on the medal.  Graham, our Captain, brought along his own caddy, Angel, and one wonders whether his score was influenced by the support he received.  Angel, our Competition Secretary, unfortunately is not able to play at present as he has had an operation on his shoulder.  We wish him speedy recovery!  The cliffhanger continues on the Consistency Chart with Dennis regaining top place.

The two guest prizes were won by Doke from Holland and again, Brian Wakeley, both scoring 31 Stableford points..

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4            Brian Hines
Hole 8            Clive Dresner
Hole 11          Helmut Treiber
Hole 14          Doris Shearman-Earp

There were two twos today, from Stan Tarabula on hole 4 and Luc Verhaegen on hole 8. Well done to both of them as they were not even nearest to the pin. They receive the customary golf ball.

As for the main competition results:
5th place with a net 73 off 13 hcp, Michael Davison
4th place with a net 73 off 23 hcp, Graham Sutton, beating Michael on the back 9
3rd place with a net 72 off 6 hcp, Dennis Pyman
2nd place with a net 71 off 23 hcp, David Davies
1st place with a net 71 off 20 hcp, Stephen Grey, beating David on the back 9

2014: Monthly Medal (5.11.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 5 November 2014

Today was the first Wednesday of November and as every first Wednesday of the month, we played our Monthly Medal competiton.  We had 31 members  competing for the medal and 5 guests competing for the guest prize playing Individual Stableford.  The weather had turned to autumn temperatures, reaching just above 20 degrees C, and quite strong winds.  The results may have been influenced by these conditions as places two to six were all three and four strokes above par.  Only Neville, who has been in very good form of late, came in with under par. A magnificent result! We had two extra prizes today and they were given for second nearest to the pin on holes 4 and 11.  However, on hole 11 only one player reached the green so the second place was raffled together with the normal weekly raffle.

After the prize giving, which was also attended by Rob’s delightful little 9 months old girl, about 20 of us stayed on at the Club for lunch and as always enjoyed a nice meal in good company.

The two guest prizes were won by Brian Wakeley with 32 points off 16 handicap and second  came Bernard from France with 30 points playing off 8 handicap.

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4           1st Clive Dresner, 2nd John Garnett
Hole 8            Michael Davison
Hole 11          Rob Ritchie
Hole 14          Greta Biersteker

There were two twos today, both from Clive Dresner.  He stocked up on his golf balls by two.

As for the main competition results:
5th place with a net 76 off 23 hcp, Dave Davies
4th place with a net 75 off 8 hcp, Greta Biersteker
3rd place with a net 75 off 23 hcp, Graham Sutton, our Captain, beating Greta on the back 9
2nd place with a net 75 off  20 hcp, Jan Boultbee, again beating Graham on the back 9
1st place with a net 69 off 33 hcp, Neville Woodfine

2014: Monthly Medal (8.10.)

Once again the frightening Medal day had arrived. I always try to ignore the fact that it is a medal and so be able to play as any normal day. No use. I started badly and ended just the same. Nothing worked well. In any case it was a perfect day for golf. Wonderful temperature, no wind at all and the course in a rather decent condition. The picture above shows my playing partners today who with a combined age of 250 years are demonstrating the secret of longevity and good golf, beer, coffee with brandy and Norman´s endless supply of sweets, biscuits and sandwiches!
We had some very good results as given below. The top 3 places were very close but our runner up Chris had a 10 on the 17th, even an 8 would have won, and 3rd placed Michael had a double bogey on the last leaving Richard the winner after a gross level par back 9. Great scores from all 3 players and Michael had the consolation of knocking Dennis off 1st place in the consistency chart.
We had 3 guests and the winner with a good 34 points off hcp 13 was Malcolm. Well done.

Nearest the pins on the par 3’s :
Hole 4             Michael Davison
Hole 8             Edi Rogers (has always been his favourite par 3)
Hole 11           Clive Dresner.
Hole 14           Luc Verhaegen.

There were 2 two’s today, by Dennis and Edi, who received the customary ball.

As for the main competition results:
5th place with a net 74, off 22 hcp : Our Captain Graham Sutton.
4th place with a net 73, off 18 hcp : James Burnet.
3rd place with a net 72, off 14 hcp : Michael Davison.
2nd place with a net 70, off 21 hcp : Chris Van Bemmelen.
1st place with a net 69, off 8 hcp: Our Vice-president Richard Davis.

Very well done all of you.

2014: Monthly Medal (3.9.)

Venue : Bonalba Golf &Spa, Wednesday, 3 September 2014

Today we played the September Monthly Medal.  There was a good turnout of 31 members. The Captain welcomed back some of our “swallows” , Jim, Kate and Terry who returned to a sweltering Spain.  Quite a few of the members who would normally walk the course, opted to take a buggy and respect to the players who bravely soldiered on pushing their trolley in these hot and humid conditions!  We  had two extra prizes today for 3rd shot onto the green.  Marie-Josée won the Ladies’ prize on hole 9 but none of the men qualified on hole 15, probably due to the fact that the rule this time was that all shots had to be taken off the fairway. Well done to Clive for an excellent win pipping Terry to the post by one shot!

We also had one guest today, Xavier from Belgium, who scored a credible 28 Stableford points.

As is tradition after Medal play, our Captain had arranged a lunch, this time at the Bonalba Golf Club restaurant and some 30 members plus guests enjoyed a good meal in excellent company.

Nearest the pins on the par 3’s :
Hole 4            Kate Hurley
Hole 8            Clive Dresner
Hole 11          Dennis Pyman
Hole 14          Bob Crow

There were also two twos today, on hole 8 from Clive and on hole 14 from Bob, winning back one of the golf balls he sponsors.

As for the main competition results:
5th place with a net 72 off 22 hcp, Guy Letort
4th place with a net 72 off 25 hcp, Santi Hung, better back 9
3rd place with a net 72 off 23 hcp, Doris Shearman-Earp, beating Santi on the back 9
2nd place with a net 70 off 24 hcp, Terry Malone
1st place with a net 69 off 7 hcp, Clive Dresner

2014: Monthly Medal (6.8.)

Venue : Bonalba Golf &Spa, Wednesday, 6 August 2014

Today 19 of our members competed for the August medal in typical low 30’s August weather.  Helmut , who has been in excellent form in recent weeks, continued his winning streak, to the detriment of Michael, who has also been playing consistently well.  Hard luck Michael and congratulations to Helmut!
Angel had sponsored two special prizes.  This time they were 3rd shots onto the green. Dennis deservedly won the men’s prize. He was just a few inches away from scoring an eagle.
We were delighted to say hello to Rip who is going to return to play golf in September.
After the prize giving, our members and guest went to La Villa Restaurant in Campello where we enjoyed a very tasty Chinese meal.

There was one two today from Stan on hole 8. Well done Stan, especially as his ball was not the one nearest to the pin.  He receives the customary golf ball.

As for the main competition results:

4th place with a net 72 off 21 hcp, Chris van Bemmelen

2014: Monthly Medal (2.7.)

Venue : Bonalba Golf &Spa, Wednesday, 2 July 2014

Today we played our Monthly Medal for July.   There were 25 members competing for it on this hot and humid Wednesday.  Chris and Dennis must have fancied their chances to win this Medal, both coming in with under par scores.  However, Richard surpassed them all with a gross score of 75, which is less than the majority of us had as a nett score!  An exceptional round of golf, the best score for anyone for a long time!  Well done, Richard!

As is customary after playing the Medal competition, most of us stayed behind, and were joined by some guests, to enjoy a good lunch on the terrace of the Bonalba Golf Club Restaurant.

We also had a guest  playing with us today, Andre from the Midlands who scored a credible 32 points.

Two additional prizes today were on hole 10:
2nd shot nearest the pin (men):  Richard Davis
3rd shot nearest the pin (ladies):  Christiane Tarabula

2014: Monthly Medal and Ford Leagues Qualifier (14.5.)

Venue : Bonalba Golf &Spa, Wednesday, 14 May 2014.

Today we played the May Medal.  This competition was also nominated for the Ford Leagues Qualifier.  We had sponsorship for two extra prizes, the mens’ and ladies’ longest drive.  The morning started out with thick black rain clouds threatening to spoil the game and we did have some light rain earlier on but luckily it did not last very long and the weather improved for the remainder of the competiton.  There were 30 players competing for the Medal and one guest. Congratulations go to Helmut who won with a net 3 under par.  Apart from the medal prize he was also presented with a bottle of Moet champagne.  This year Luc and Robert very generously are sponsoring an additonal medal prize which is presented on the day of the competition and which is either a bottle of Champagne or a box of Belgian chocolates. Well done also to Michael Davison for  consistent medal play.  He came second this month after having won the April medal.

At the prize giving Richard gave us an update on Edi’s situation.  His operation will be next Monday, when quite a few of us will be on our annual Away Trip.  Our thoughts and best wishes go to him and his family.
After every Monthly Medal, the Captain arranges a lunch for members and guests.  This time we went to the Chinese Restaurant La Villa in El Campello, where we were all enjoying an excellent meal.  During lunch, the Captain took the opportunity to present Jean-Jacques Lavergne with a bottle of wine to thank him for his efforts in helping us with our website.

2014: Monthly Medal (2.4.)

Apr 3, 2014

Venue : Bonalba Golf &Spa, Wednesday, 2 April 2014.
Today, being the first Wednesday of the month, there were 27 of us playing for the Monthly Medal.  Apart from competing for the April Medal, we also had an additional sponsor.  SPECSAVERS of Benidorm donated two vouchers towards new glasses or sunglasses to the winner of last week’s competition and to today’s winner.
It was good to see two of our newer members, Michael and Peter, taking first and second place today, both with 71 points but Peter was pipped to the post by Michael winning on the back nine. The “king of nearest the pin” today was our ex Captain Brian, who was nearest on three occasions and also scored a birdie on two of them.  Commiserations to Keith, one of our longstanding members. He was a contender for the Medal until the very last hole and if he had only been able to score a net par on this hole , his score of 74 would have turned into the winning score.  That’s the way golf goes!

Longest drive Ladies:  Greta Biersteker
Longest drive Men:  Dennis Pyman

Nearest the pins :
Hole 4            Brian Hines
Hole 8            Dennis Pyman
Hole 11          Brian Hines
Hole 14          Brian Hines

Bob Crow, our sponsor of the golf balls for a two, had a  somewhat expensive day as there were 5 birdies.  Brian birdied the 4th and 14th, Dennis and  Greta birdied the 8th and Michael the 11th.

As for the main competition results:
5th place with a net 73 off 17 hcp, James Burnet
4th place with a net 72 off 23 hcp, Jean-Jaques Lavergne
3rd place with a net 72 off 5 hcp, Dennis Pyman, beating JJ on the back 9
2nd place with a net 71 off 22 hcp, Peter van der Mee
1st place with a net 71 off15 hcp, Michael Davison, beating Peter on the back 9

2014: Monthly Medal (5.3.)

Mar 17, 2014

Playing the monthly medal is difficult enough in normal conditions but when it´s cold and windy as it was at Bonalba today and the tees are off the back then it becomes impossible to return a good score, but we are not all normal golfers and one of our members, Peter Corbett managed to return a net 75 and win the competition by 3 clear shots! The course was assessed as playing 4 shots more difficult than par and therefore he received the neccessary cut in handicap. Great result Peter.
Our competition secretary Angel Centenera kindly agreed to sponsor two additional prizes for the 2nd shot nearest the pin on the 10th and the 3rd shot nearest the pin on on the 15th. Both prizes were duly won by Dennis Pyman. It would be unkind to mention that Dennis was through the green in two on the 15th with two great shots, putted to 3 feet to win the prize but then 3 putted from there!

There was one 2 today from Bob Crow who received his own sponsored golf ball!

As for the competition results:
5th place with a net 80 off 22 hcp, Maureen Fanti
4th place with a net 79 off 5 hcp, Dennis Pyman
3rd place with a net 79 off 22 hcp, Graham Sutton
2nd place with a net 78 off 14 hcp, Franco Fanti
1st place with a net 75 off 26 hcp, Peter Corbett
