On Medal days, players are always hopeful of avoiding those card-destroying scores at one or two holes. As it turned out, there were plenty of good scores recorded today. A net score of 75 was good enough (3 over par) to secure 5th place, the problem being that 6 people came in with this score - Stan, Marie-Josée, Graham, Guy, yours truly and Mo - and it was Mo the merrier because he had the best back 9.
Places 2 to 4 were each separated by just the one point, these positions occupied by fine scoring from the two Brians (Hines and Wakely) and a one-under 71 from Edi Rogers. The outright winner, with a sparkling 68 off his handicap of 11, was Michael Davison. This keeps him well in contention near the top of our consistency chart, so many congratulations to him on a great round.
However, still with Michael, a little anecdote. Earlier on I mentioned how players would be keen to avoid high-scoring calamities. Michael told me afterwards of his lucky escape on Hole 9. A sliced drive across the lake headed for the out-of -bounds area on the right. He took a provisional off the tee and deposited it in the lake. Then he did exactly the same thing with a third ball! So, he was looking at 7 off the tee when he finally got a ball in play. But the golfing gods were smiling on him today: one of his playing partners, Greta, found his first ball - just in bounds! The threat of a possible 11 or worse turned into a 6.
