2019: Away Day Poniente Golf (28.8.)

Venue:  Villaitana Poniente Golf, 28 August 2019

Today was our first official competition after the summer break and we would like to thank Brian Hines for keeping the golf going during that time.
The re-start of our official competitions took us to Poniente Golf, the shorter of the two courses at Villaitana. The Poniente course is a par 62 with 8 par 4’s and 10 par 3’s, so a good short game was required by the 24 players, 23 members and 1 guest, who enrolled for today’s competition.  The format was Individual Stableford and it was a qualifying round for all competitions, including handicap adjustments.
After heavy rain and thunderstorms the previous few days, we were relieved to see blue skies again this morning and enjoyed the warm and sunny weather, maybe even a bit too hot for some.

The slope at Poniente is much lower than Bonalba, which gave us a very much reduced playing handicap.  Looking at the results, it seems that the course today was favouring the male players, as the first eight places went to the men. The best lady of the day was Marie-Jo with a very respectable score of 33 points.  Congratulations goes to the player of the day, James who, with 40 points, was well ahead of the field. The fifth place was hotly contested and had to be decided on countback of the last 6 holes which gave Eric the lead over Tony and Michel.

Summarizing the results:
Nearest the pins:
Hole 4                 Greta Biersteker
Hole 8                 Dave Tomlins
Hole 12               Tony Dewavrin
Hole 16               Luc Verhaegen

Because of the many par 3’s on this course, there was an abundance of twos today, 7 in total:
Hole 7 – Marie-Jo, Hole 9 + 11 – Eric Page, Hole 15 – Greta and Moe, Hole 16 – Greta and Luc.
Our thanks to Bob Crowe, who is sponsoring the golf balls for this competition.
