 This Wednesday we had 22 members competing in our October Medal Maximum Score which qualified for handicap adjustments. 

As our Captain was away on holiday, Stan Tarabula kindly agreed to take charge of this competition and presented the prizes and also arranged the Medal lunch after the game at the Bonalba Restaurant, which again was very well attended.

 

The results were quite mixed, some very good ones, especially from Karen and Michael and for some reason, some unusually high scoring.  The full list can be seen on our WhatsApp group and on Master Scoreboard.

2014: Indiv. Stableford (17.12.)

Today was the final qualifying competition of the year as the last two Wednesdays of the year will be Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and a lot of our members are away for the festive season. We had 26 members and two guests playing Individual Stableford.  Despite the glorious weather, the overall results were lower than average. Nobody reached 36 points and therefore the course played 3 strokes above par. However, congratulations go to Keith, one of our octogenarians and one of  the founder members of the Society, for a very good win. This being the Christmas season, the Captain obviously felt generous and agreed to award four extra prizes to accommodate both, the lower and higher handicap players.  Results are shown below.
There was also the semi-final of the singles k/o competition being played in which Richard Davis beat Dennis Pyman.  The final will now be between Richard and Michael Davison.

We welcomed back our guests Jan and Brian. Jan won the guest prize narrowly beating Brian.

Back to normal today after the excitement of Captain’s Day and Dinner.  The competition today was Individual Stableford which was also a qualifier for the Ford Leagues Competition.  Well done to the winner, Clive, who was the only player to score above par or in fact to par.  Neville, in 5^th place, is continuing his good run and again coming in with a very good score .  Good to see Peter Corbett back in Spain and winning one of the nearest the pins. The Consistency Chart is hotly contested by Michael and Dennis.  This week Michael has narrowly overtaken Dennis. Can Dennis “hit back”?

The two guest prizes were won by Brian Wakeley and Heidi Dewavrin.  We are looking forward to Brian becoming a member in the new year.

Before the presentation, the Secretary informed everyone that she is organising a table for the annual Christmas Dinner/Dance at La Cova on Saturday, 13 December, in conjunction with Richard’s Lodge.  Anyone interested, please contact Doris.

2014: Away Day Alicante Golf (12.11.)

This was our fifth Away Day of the year which qualified for the Bill Williams Away Day Trophy.  Alicante Golf was the course chosen by our Captain. There was a good turn out of 32 members and guests.  We started with a “Spanish” breakfast of coffee and tostada before the competition which was Individual Stableford.  Playing away from your home course is never as easy, nevertheless, half of our members came in with respectable 30 points and over.  It was nice to see Peter, one of our new members, in the prizes. Very well done, Peter. Congratulations also go to Rob and Jan for a very good round of golf and it took a countback to the last 6 holes to determine the winner.  Sadly, this will be the last game for a while for Rob as he is returning to his work in Mozambique.

Also a very good result from our guest player Gay Brooks. In fact, she had top score of all the players with 37 points playing off 18 handicap.  We look forward to her and her husband John becoming members in the new year.

2014: Indiv.Stableford (22.10.)

Today we played another Individual Stableford competition.  33 members and guests enjoyed their golf in glorious Spanish autumn sunshine, in fact with temperatures in the high 20’s, it seemed more like summer.  The course, being prepared for the winter season, was in good condition, especially the fairways.  Marie-José was the “queen of the par 3’s” today with two nearest to the pins and a birdie on one of them.  Respect to Richard for his very steady play and being in the frame again this week. He is continuing to improve his position on the consistency chart.  Our special congratulations go to John “Riggers” Rigby for an impressive score of 39 points!

Our best wishes for a speedy recovery from his hip operation go to Bob Crow. He is saying that everything went well and hopes to be back in Spain end November and back on course by Christmas.

We had two guest prizes today. Second came Philip scoring 32 points off 19 handicap and the winner for the second time was Gay Brooks with 33 points also playing off 19 handicap.  We look forward to Gay and John joining us as members in the new year.

It was a full house for today’s competition.  34 members and 6 guests turned up to play Individual Stableford.  To reduce the waiting time for the prize giving, our Captain had arranged to play off the 1^st and 10^th tee. For the members, today’s competition also qualfied for the Ford Leagues  The list as published on the website, shows that at the moment Michael is the leading  qualifier and there is a close run for second place between Neville, Les and Chris.
The course was back in full playing mode today with the bunkers back in play after having been GUR because of the recent heavy rains, so this round was back to being a qualifier for handicap purposes.
We had additonal sponsorship today from Phil of SPECSAVERS of Benidorm in the form of two vouchers for their €89 range of glasses.to be presented to the overall winners men and ladies. Congratulations go to Jeff, our President, and Jan.

The winner of the guest prize was G. Brooks with a score of 30 and playing off 14 handicap.

Today our competition was Individual Stableford which also counted as a qualifier for the Ford Leagues Competition.  For the Ford League, there can be a maximum of 12 games played of which the best 4 results will be taken to qualify.  The two best players will then have the chance to compete as a pair in the Ford League, the first round of which is normally played in the spring of each year. Last year Clive and Doris narrowly missed the cut-off to go into the second round.

Today's results show it was a very close match between first and second place with Jeff winnning by one shot counting back to the last 6 holes.
It was good to see that Edi’s recovery from his operation is going so well and him completing 18 holes with a good score of 31 points. Our thoughts are with John Webber who was taken ill in Germany but is now back in the UK and we wish him well and hope he will be back in Spain playing golf very soon.

We had two guests today, Xavier from Belgium won the guest prize with 34 points.

With Graham, our Captain on holiday in Ireland, it was Luc, our Vice-Captain, who organised this week’s competition.  Having played a team game last week, for this week he had arranged for us to play Singles Stableford.  There were 24 members competing, the numbers were slightly up from last week as some members had returned to “sunny Spain”. Well played to the top five placings. They delivered a very close game.  It was good to see James in the prizes and getting back to his old form. There were also 4 guests competing for the guest prize which was won for the second time running by William, having had his handicap cut by 2 strokes and still coming in with 36 points.

Finally, I would like to mention that some of the members who came attired in our new CBGS shirt and cap, all looked very smart in their azur blue outfits.

Today’s competition was Individual Stableford.  It was a day where a lot of players came in with very good results.  Out of a total of 23 players, 17 had 30 points or more.  6 players had 35 points, 3 of which made it into the prizes on account of the back 9 results. Congratulations go to Sandra for a very good win.  She has been playing well over the past few weeks, so this did not come as a surprise and it has earned her a well deserved cut in her handicap.

There was also one doubles knockout match being played.  Michael Davison and Gordon Burton beat John Garnett and Doris Shearman-Earp 3 and 2.

The Captain ended the prize giving with some sad new when he announced that Angel’s wife Mila had passed away on Monday, 26 May.  Our thoughts and sympathy are with Angel and his family.

2014: Ford Golf League, Individual Stableford (30.4.)

Today was the 2nd Round of the Ford Golf League which will be played on a monthly basis throughout 2014. The format was individual stableford and with beautiful sunny conditions the scene was set for some good scores. The greens were in excellent condition but with the tees set back on the front 9 holes good scores were hard to come by, for some of us!

We had 27 members playing today and we said goodbye for the Summer to Kate and Jim Hurley and Peter and Hilda Corbett and our Captain wished them a fond farewell and a safe return later in the year.

No 2´s were recorded today bringing a smile to sponsor Bob Crow´s face!

Dennis, Doris, Clive and Richard are representing the society in the Ford Golf League regional finals at Oliva Nova next Wednesday so the monthly medal will be moved to the 14th and next week we will be playing a team game.

Today we played another Individual Stableford competition.  With the warm Spanish spring weather well and truly settled in, and with the condition of the course steadily improving, we all enjoyed a very pleasant round of golf. Instead of the normal four nearest the pin prizes, our Captain decided to allocate just two nearest the pins on the back 9 and have two second shot nearest the pins on two of the par 4s.  This decision must have been somewhat disappointing to Jan, Jeff and Richard, as they all scored a birdie on the front par 3s. Richard then continued to come nearest the pin on his second shot on hole 10. On hole 6, the second shot from Dennis came very close to the pin.  Keith, our winner today, has obviously shaken off his recent injury as he is continuing to come in with great scores.

We had three guests playing with us today, and Jan who has been a welcome guest on several occasions, was the winner with an excellent score of 37 points playing off 22 hcp.

2014: Away Day at Alenda Golf (9.4.)

Venue : Alenda Golf, Wednesday, 9 April 2014.

Today we played away at Alenda Golf.  We played an Individual Stableford competition which was also the second qualifier for the Bill Williams Away-Day Shield.  Alenda as always proved to be a popular destination.  The course was in good condition, the weather was very pleasant, so we all had an enjoyable day of golf.  Well done to the winner, John Garnett, with an excellent score of 37 points.  Also Peter Corbett is continuing to play well with his handicap being cut almost every week for the last couple of month.  The Leroux family also had a succesful day with both Jean-Paul and Pascale ending up in the first five.  On top of that, Pascale also won the weekly raffle, so their wine cellar was well and truly stacked up.  There were two nearest the pins allocated to the ladies and two to the men.  Unfortunarely,this time the pins for the ladies proved a big challenge and nobody found the greens.  Instead, the two prizes went to the 4^th and 5 th place in the main competition.

Today we played an Individual Stableford competition.  We had hoped that the strong winds from the previous night would die down but unfortunately this did not happen, so we had an “extra handicap” to deal with.  As usual, the holes on the back nine proved to be especially difficult.  However, this did not deter some of our members, who came in with some very good scores.  Angel, our Competition Secretary, had kindly offered 

to sponsor two additional prizes for the longest drives and produced himself a magnificent drive. Being first out, he expected that his drive would be beaten by somebody after him but nobody managed it, so he won his own prize. But to the delight of Chris, Angel decided to donate his prize to the fourth place in the main competition.

There were 23 members playing today, but on this occasion, we did not have the pleasure of welcoming any guests.

Today we played Individual Stableford.  Our Vice-Captain who was in charge of this week’s competition, had a somewhat difficult job organising the start times, as on this occasion, there were only a limited amount of buggies available and some of our members rely heavily on using a buggy, hence the slightly diminished field of players.  However, that did not deter one of our senior members, Norman Emmerson, to come in with a magnificent score and win the competition, and, being as fit as he is, used his pull trolley, as always!  At the prize-giving someone suggested we should do a “drugs test” on Norman.  Was there any brandy in that coffee consumed on the 10th ?  Also congratulations go to one of our new members, Greta Biersteker, who achieved an Eagle on the second hole, a par 5.

We had 6 guests playing with us today and awarded two guest prizes. Second place went to Michel with 34 points and the winner Mike Turner also had 34 points, beating Michel on the back nine.

2014: Away-Day Alicante Golf (19.2.)

Venue : Alicante Golf, Wednesday, 19 February 2014.

Today we had our first Away-Day of the year which was a qualifier for the Bill Williams Away-Day Shield.  Graham, our new Captain, had arranged for us to play Alicante Golf at San Juan.  An interesting course with 6 of each par 3, par 4 and par 5, designed by Seve Ballesteros.  On this occasion, the course turned out to be quite difficult to play, the CBA (Computer Buffer Adjustment) being -2, i.e. it played two shots more difficult.  Maybe the hollow-tining of the tee-boxes were slightly off-putting for some players, but all in all a very pleasant day of golf in beautiful sunshine! And well done to Peter Corbett coming third on his substantial handicap cut last week.

We had 4 guests playing with us today.  The guest prize went to Bob Collins with 31 points.

Apart from the normal prizes, we had two additional ones:

2014: Indiv. Stableford (22.1.)

Venue : Bonalba Golf &Spa, Wednesday, 22nd January  2014.

Today we played another Individual Stableford competition.  The forecasted rain luckily did not materialise but conditions were not ideal. This was reflected by the overall scoring.  The course played 2 shots more difficult and there was only one player who achieved 36+ points.  This was Jan, one of our new members, Well played, Jan!

After the prize giving, the Captain reminded everyone that the Annual Presentation Dinner is being held at Browns Restaurant on Friday, 31 January.

There were 4 guests playing with us  today. Gay won the guest prize, a bottle of wine.

Wednesday 15th January 2014  

The weather was perfect for a game of golf and the high scores achieved today reflected this. A special congratulations to our new member John Garnett who scored 37pts and came a worthy second, well played John. Helmut Trieber was on form today with good target Golf, achieving nearest the pin on Holes 8 & 11. But today our Winner, with some fantastic, brilliant Golf  was Cive Dresner a tremendous 40pts playing off 6 Hcp, now that´s good golf, well played Clive. We were due to play a Team Game today but with last minute cancellations and additions, the Captain decided to play an Individual Stableford format

We had 5 guests today and the winner was Michael Davison receiving the guest  prize of a bottle of wine. Michael is now a Member and we welcome Michael into our Society. Also we welcome our New Members, Greta Biersteker, Peter Van Der Mee and Jan Boulton, we are very pleased indeed to have you all on board, enjoy your Golf and have some fun also.

First and Second

Venue : Bonalba Golf &Spa, Wednesday, 11th December 2013.

Today we played an Individual Stableford competition.  The good weather seemed to have deserted us on this occasion as it was getting colder as the day went on.  This may have reflect the relatively low scores.  Only one player came in with a very good result and that was Gordon.  The course played at 3 shots more difficult, hence Gordon’s handicap will have a big and long overdue cut. It was good to see Edi playing today, after quite some time away and he was in the prizes!

After the prize giving, the Captain announced that it had been decided to make a change in the Society Rules regarding placement of the ball on the fairways.  Due to the present condition of the fairways, the ball can now be placed within a club length of its lie.  This rule applies to the Costa Blanca Society only until further notice.

There were 3 guests playing with us  today. Ray from North East England received the guest prize with 33 points, beating Greta from the Netherlands on the back nine.
