2015: Christmas Present Day (16.12.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 16th December 2015

With Christmas approaching fast, our Captain declared today's competition the “Christmas Present Day”. So on this occasion not only the top results were rewarded, but there was a present for everyone.

We played Individual Stableford in weather which was reminiscent of a beautiful spring rather than a winter’s day.  By hole 4, off came the jackets and sweaters giving us the freedom of an unrestricted swing which definitely helped some of us. It certainly seemed that way with today's winner Helmut who scored 21 points on the back 9 and with this win he climbed into the top 10 of the Consistency Chart. Well done Helmut!

As there was no report last week, I would like to mention the winner of the December Medal, Luc Verhaegen. Congratulations for a fantastic round of 69 which started with a 9 and finished 4, 4, 4 which is quite a task for any player.  He continued his excellent form today with 34 points on a reduced handicap and narrowly missed third place.

We had two guests playing today and Rudy’s friend Franz won the guest prize.

2015: Bill Williams Away Day Shield - Alicante (2.12.)

With a full house of 28 members (Good for this time of year) we returned to one of our favourite away day venues, Alicante Golf for the penultimate round of this years sponsored Bill Williams Trophy. As normal part of our package included tostado and coffee but in the pleasant surroundings of their newly opened and refurbished restaurant.
Quite cool at the start but rapidly warming up to a beautiful Winter´s day and the course as usual was presented in good condition so we expected some good scores and we were not disappointed. Dennis Pyman led the way with an excellent 39 points after declaring it was the worst he´d played in a long time! He was closely followed by Kate Hurley, her best round this year despite not scoring on the 18th!
We don´t publish the overall results of the Bill Williams Away Day Shield until after the final round but I can assure you that it´s very close this year among the top 5 players. We are returning to Alicante for the final round on Wednesday January 13th so please support your Captain and Sponsor in ensuring we have a bumper turnout.

2015: Individual Stableford (25.11.)

A chilly start to our Wednesday competition fueled by a cool breeze which threatened to keep the scores down but the forward yellow tees for our male members helped to produce some above average scores. A good turnout of 36 members and 3 guests helped to produce a good competition.
Whilst not among the winners this week, Michael Davison now looks to have an unassailable lead in the Consistency Chart after a quiet couple of weeks from his main challenger Eddie Rogers. Like last year though we are awarding prizes to the top 10 players in the chart, so please keep on fighting, if only to replenish your wine cellars.
Two of our ladies, Jan and Greta despite the tee advantage for the men produced their best rounds for some time but not quite enough to defeat Helmut who had a great round of 39 points to win the competition.
Our league team who haven´t had the best of starts to this years competition were playing earlier this week against Don Cayo at their home course, Altea Golf Club. I am delighted to report that we won 3 games to 1 with wins for Dennis and Michael, Richard and Eddie and finally Greta and Jan (Despite their handicap cuts after today´s competition). A great result which we hope is the start of many more.

2015: Indiv. Stableford (4.11.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa
Having now recovered from last week’s Captains Day and Dinner, we were expecting to play today the November Monthly Medal but when we arrived to sign in with the Captain, we were informed that there was no Medal Play as the course was not in a suitable condition.  Most of the yellow tees were in a forward position near the red tees as the yellow tee boxes were being sanded.  Also the bunkers were damaged due to the recent heavy rainfall.  So we played a normal Individual Stableford competition.

As the sanding of the yellow tees will continue for another week, the Medal Competition is now scheduled for the 18th November.

There were some outstanding results in the top places.  However, this competition does not qualify for any handicap adjustment but will be taken into consideration for the Consistency Chart.

We had two guests playing today and the winner of the guest prize was Ricky with 34 points.

2015: Presidents Day (7. & 10.)

The Individual Winners
Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa and La Villa Restaurant, 7 & 10th September 2015

On Wednesday the 7th we played the Presidents Day competition which was Individual Stableford with the Presentation Dinner on the following Saturday the 10th at the restaurant La Villa in El Campello.  All prizes for this day were sponsored by our President, Neville Woodfine. In addition, on competition day we were treated to “half-way house” with a spread of delicious savouries and cakes laid on by Neville’s wife Sandra.  In fact, that was the highlight of the day for some of us who were struggling with the golf and were tucking into the meat and potato pie amongst other things.

The President had stipulated that only those players who supported Presidents Day by attending the presentation dinner would be eligible for a prize and our congratulations go to the following winners:

Nearest to pins:
Gordon Burton, John Garnett and Eddie Rogers on 2 par 3’s.

Individual Results:

2015: Team Game & Indiv. Stableford (30.9.)

The winning team
Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 30th September 2015

Today was the birthday of our Captain Angel and he sponsored a number of extra prizes. We played a team game of three best scores but there were also prizes for the best five individual scores.  In addition we were competing for various other prizes thanks to the generosity of our Captain.  Again we had a very good turnout of 41 members and 6 guests and luckily we were able to start from tees 1 and 10 to cut down the waiting time to prize giving.

But please note that the course will be very busy in October and we will not get additional tee-times to the ones already booked.  So make sure your name is on the list to ensure that you get a game as the allocation will be on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Congratulations go the winning team for an excellent score of 6 points better than par! On the individual scoring, Eddie is the man of the moment, being in the prizes week after week.  And finally, we need to mention the longest drive for the men. We were all  marvelling at the enormous drive from Brian who managed to get past the very impressive 265 m drive from “Big Jeff”.

There was an error at the prize giving as Gay actually came 6th and James was 4th. Apologies to both!

Just to remind everyone that next Wednesday will be Presidents Day and the prizes will be presented at the Dinner on Saturday, 10 October.  Please note: to be eligible for a prize, you are expected to attend the Dinner.

2015: Indiv. Stableford (23.9.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 23rd September 2015

Today we played Individual Stableford which also qualified for the CL Golf League. We had a very good turn-out with 45 members and guests.  A number of our “swallows” have now returned to Spain as the autumn weather is settling in giving us sunshine and comfortable temperatures in the mid twenties – ideal golfing weather.

In competitions there is a saying “Beware of the injured (or ill) golfer” as on quite a few occasions a player who has not been well, plays some wonderful golf.  Is it because he concentrates more to make up for not being 100% fit or is it that he does not raise any expectations and therefore relaxes more and plays better?  Or was it that you just had a great day and everything went well for you?  Whatever the reason, congratulations to you, Jeff, on an excellent win!

Looking at the Consistency Chart, Eddie Rogers, the sponsor, could be in danger of winning his own prize and Jan, our Vice-Captain has now overtaken her partner John.

Friday, 24th September is the first match of the Costa Blanca Golf League.  Our team is playing Marina Alta Golf Society at La Sella Golf Course.  We wish them well !

2015: Indiv. Stablegford (9.9.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 9th September 2015

Today we came together for a team game.  However, the Gota Fría on the previous days somewhat spoiled our competition as the golf course was very wet, including all the bunkers having turned into ponds. So for the protection of the course, we could not use buggies and even the trolleys had to stay on the pathway.  Consequently, a number of members pulled out of the competition.  Our Captain found it very hard to stick to the original concept and decided that we should play Individual Stableford instead.

He also decided that this competition would not be qualifying for handicap adjustments nor the Consistency Chart.

Welcome back from Holland, Greta and Peter, as Greta made her mark on the par 3’s

2015: Indiv. Stableford (26.8.)

Ready to party!
Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 26th August 2015

Today we played Individual Stableford.  Although temperatures were slightly lower than of previous weeks, the weather was still hot and humid.  It was good to see Jeff Murten back and playing after his operation.  Congratulations to Michael for his win today, as his quest for top of the Consistency Chart gathers momentum.  To date he is also top of the qualifyhing competition attendance list with 23, followed by Graham Sutton with 21 games.
Again, as the number of players competing were below 28, only three prizes were awarded instead of the normal 5.
We say good-bye to Jean-Paul and Pascale Leroux until the end of September and look forward to our members who will be returning soon from their summer break.

2015: Indiv. Stableford (12.8.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 12th August 2015

The “hardy” of us turned up this morning to play Individual Stableford.  We had hoped for a good thunderstorm to clear the air but instead we just had a few minutes of heavy rain the night before.  So we soldiered on in weather conditons that resembled a sauna.  There seemed to have been a big gap before the last two groups came in.   Did they have a cold shower between holes? Whatever their secret ingredient was, four out of the first five winners came from those two groups.  Special congratulations go to Edi who has been in remarkable form since his operation.

We welcomed one guest today, Charly, a friend of the Leroux family.

2015: Indiv. Stableford (29.7.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 29th July 2015

Normally we would arrive at the hottest part of the year at this time, but this year the sizzling summer temperatures have come early and again we played in very hot and humid conditions. But who is complaining? Some members just returning from Northern Europe were happy to get some sun and warmth again after the chilly weather they encountered back home.
The competition today was Individual Stableford. Congratulations go to the winner, Tony, for an excellent win.  He was 4 points ahead of second place, Dennis, who played to par on his low handicap.  Tony is now going back to France for the rest of the summer.  Did I detect some relief on the faces of some of the members when he said his good-byes?  He certainly is a formidable competitior.
As the total of members competing was below 28, only three prizes instead of the normal 5 prizes were given out.  Bad luck, Angel and Graham, no wine for you!

2015: Indiv. Stableford (8.7.)

...and who are these intruders in the background?
Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 8th July 2015

As the very hot weather continues, some of our members decided to stay away. So we had only 22 members competing for Individual Stableford which also qualified for the Campbell Lamont Golf League.  We started both from tee 1 and tee 10 thus cutting down the waiting time for the prize giving.  There were only three main prizes today as there were less than 28 members competing.

Congratulations go to John King for an excellent win. He also won the special prize of best score on all par 4’s with 22 points. This time John has come over with his two young grand kids. Where they the secret weapon and got him into top form for his win this week?

We also welcomed two guests today, Max and Phil, the latter winning the guest prize.

2015: Indiv. Stableford (24.6.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 24 June 2015

We had an early start today for our Individual Stableford competition.  Even the “late risers” among our members had to agree that it was a good idea as it meant an earlier finish and we were able to avoid the hot temperatures of the early afternoon.

We welcomed backl Greta , who would normally be in Holland at this time of the year but she and her daughter decided to have a break from the cold and the rain and came over for a short holiday. And although she had to borrow clubs, she came in with a very credible result, some of it due to some very good putting with “Peter’s putter” and she also shot a birdie on hole 9 which has stroke index 3.
Congratulations go to the winner, John Brooks.  He has been in good form lately.  Keep up the good work, John!

The k/o match of the week was between Michael Davison and Chris van Bemmelen and Chris, who also has been in excellent form recently, came out the winner. There was some consolation for Michael who came away with three other prizes plus a golf ball for his birdie.

The guest prize went to Marleen. This will be the last guest prize for her as she will join the Society again in July.

Summarising the results:

The two special prizes, sponsored by our Captain, for the two longest drives went to
Gay Brooks and Michael Davison.

2nd place with a net 34 points off 28 hcp, Keith Preston, beating Jan on the back 9
1st place with a net 36 points off 29 hcp, John Brooks

2015: Away Day (10.6.)

Venue: Villaitana Poniente Golf Course, 10 June 2015

As our home course Bonalba Golf was hollow-tining this week, our Captain arranged to have an unofficial Away-Day, in addition to the 6 Away-Days which qualify for the Bill Williams Trophy. We went to play Individual Stableford on the par 62 Poniente course at Villaitana which is located in the hills and woodlands next to the Championship course Levante.  Although this course has only par 3’s and 4’s, it was a good challenge of golf and tested our short game.

The final scores displayed are different from the results read out at the prize giving as there was a discrepancy about the Slope Chart at Villaitana and the official Federation course ratings but this did not alter the placings.  This competition did not qualify for handicap adjustments but it counted towards the Consistency Chart as it was a competitive challenge and we had 27 members supporting it.

Congratulations go to all the winners and a special mention to Dennis who scored an Eagle on hole 3. Also it was good to see “Stormin’ Norman”, one of our octogenarians and supplier of fine drink and food on the golf course, in the prizes.

2015: Indiv. Stableford (13.5.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 13 May 2015

Today’s competition was Individual Stableford. However, on this occasion we had a diminished field of players due to the fact that we did not return from our annual away trip, this time to Aguilas, until quite late on Tuesday evening and a lot of us felt that three days, and for some of us who went on the extra day, even four days of continuous golf was enough and we needed a day of rest.  However, some brave souls who went on the trip turned up on this day and came in with very good scores, especially Michael with 35 and Jan with 33.  How do you do it?!
Congratulations to Helmut, the winner with a fantastic 39 points.

The short par 3’s were taken over by our Belgian contingent, Luc S and Luc V, who not only were nearest to the pin but also scored birdies.  And Roger, one of our newer members, did well on the back par 3’s.  Well done to all !

There was also a singles knockout being played.  Well done Chris van Bemmelen, who beat Bob Crow.

We also had four guests today, and the guest prize went to Marleen who scored a good 32 points.

Summarising of the results:

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4           Luc Sienaert
Hole 8           Luc Verhaegen
Hole 11         Roger Hunger
Hole 14         Roger Hunger

There were three 2’s, the two Luc’s on hole 8 and Chris van Bemmelen chipped in on hole 14. They receive the customary golf ball.

4th place with 35 points off 30 hcp, Luc Verhaegen
3rd place with 35 points off 12 hcp, Michael Davison, beating Luc on the back 9

2 May 2015

2015: Indiv. Stableford (29.4.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 29 April 2015

Today we played another Individual Stableford competition.  We had 31 members and one guest. The weather was pleasantly warm and the course was in good condition, obviously benefitting from the recent downpour we had as part of a thunderstorm. However, some of us struggled with our putting,  the ball just didn’t want to sink into the hole and frustratingly was lipping out or stopping on the edge of the hole.
This competition was also used for starting off our knock-out matches.  The results can be seen on the chart at the right hand side of our website. All further matches will have to be arranged between the players themselves and can be played at mutual convenient times up to the given deadlines.
The results today in the top half were very close. 7 players were competing for 5th place, all scoring 32 points, and John Rigby came out top of the bunch with 19 points on the back 9.  It was good to see a”new face” among the winners. Well done Nick and, of course,  to all the other winners.
Our guest prize was won by Marleen, Luc Verhaegen’s partner, with a good 31 points.

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4           Chris van Bemmelen
Hole 8           Luc Verhaegen
Hole 11         Helmut Treiber
Hole 14         Tony Dewavrin

There was one 2 today from Chris van Bemmelen, not on hole 4, as you might expect, but on hole 14. He received the customary golf balls.

The main competition results were:
5th place with 32 points off 20 hcp, John Rigby
4th place with 33 points off 12 hcp, Michael Davison
3rd place with 34 points off 28 hcp, Nick Carter
