2015: Monthly Medal (18.11.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 18th November 2015

Finally, we were able to play our Monthly Medal competition today as the yellow tees where back in their normal positions.  35 members turned up this morning, all eager to play and hoping that today would be the day when the Medal would be theirs.  Their enthusiasm was helped by the fact that the glorious weather was continuing and they were able to play in just shirt and trousers and their swing would not be hindered by various layers of clothing.  But as always, there were a few “if only’s ….” and some players were kicking themselves for messing up those last two holes. I am sure you know what I mean, Graham.
It was extremely close at the top with four identical results and the countback system was used to the full. Congratulations to Santi who had the best back 9.

Our two guests Nino and Ricky played Stableford and Nino won with 30 points off 6 handicap.  They have now joined our Society and will be playing as members as from next week.

Summarising the results:

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4             Alan Perry
Hole 8             Michael Davison
Hole 11           Greta Biersteker

There were four twos today, on hole 8 from Jeff Murten and Jan Boultbee, on hole 11 from Graham Sutton and on hole 14 from Chris van Bemmelen.  They all receive the customary golf ball.

As for the main competition results:

2015: Monthly Medal (14.10.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 14th October 2015

Today we played our Monthly Medal competition, somewhat later than usual as the first Wednesday of the month was taken up by Presidents Day.  We had 30 members and 2 guests playing. As we are now in the autumn season, first thing in the morning the temperatures are much lower than before and there was a lot of dampness on the course, making playing conditions more difficult.  This seems to have been reflected in the overall scores. The course played 4 strokes above par which means that the handicap adjustment was applied to reductions only.  The queen of the par 3’s was without doubt Ann Brook today with 3 out of 4 nearest the pin. Very well done, Ann!  The top of the leaderboard was extremely close. It was Eddie who beat Michael by one stroke on the back 9.  Congratulations to both players!  One consolation for Michael is that he has gained another valuable 9 points in his quest to win the Consistency Chart.

Luc and Frederick
The guest prize today was won by Frederick with a very good score of 30 Stableford points playing off 6 handicap.  And to add to his win, we congratulated him to his Hole-in-One on hole 8! His ball went over the flag and backspin caused it to roll back into the hole.

After the prize giving, the Captain reminded everyone that the Captains Day Competiton will be on Wednesday, 28th October with the Presentation Dinner Dance on Saturday, 31st October at the Alicante Golf Hotel.  He also mentioned that everyone is welcome to play in the competition but to be eligible for a prize, you need to attend the Dinner.

Summarising the results:

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4             Ray Prudhoe
Hole 8             Ann Brook
Hole 11           Ann Brook
Hole 14           Ann Brook

There was also one two today.  It was scored by Ray, not on hole 4 as one might expect but on hole 8.  He received the customary golf ball.

As for the main competition results:
5th place with a net 78 off 20 hcp, our Vice-Captain Jan Boultbee
4th place with a net 77 off 14 hcp, Helmut Treiber
3rd place with a net 76 off 15 hcp, Roger Hunger
2nd place with a net 75 off 12 hcp, Michael Davison
1st place with a net 75 off 14 hcp, Eddie Rogers, narrowly beating Michael on the back 9.

2015: Monthly Medal (16.9.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 16th September 2015

Today we played our Monthly Medal competition, later in the month than usual as our Captain had arranged different competitions earlier in September due to hollow-tining of the course.
The course was getting back to some normality after the heavy rains of late and the bunkers were back in play, to the regret of some of us.  We were enjoying hot and sunny conditions, for some of us the only real enjoyments as we struggled to achieve a decent score. Greta is fast becoming the Queen of the par 3’s with 3 nearest the pin last week and 2 this week and she birdied two of the par 3’s! Well done, Greta!
Congratulations to the winner Alan, one of our newer members who received a bottle of Dickens Cider as a special monthly prize for winning a medal, sponsored by Michael Davison.
Also very well done, Stan who, with a score of 71, came second and who could have been the winner on many other occasions.

After the prize giving our Vice Captain Jan Boultbee made an announcement about the date of the Away Trip 2016 to give everyone good notice so they can plan their year ahead.  The trip will take place from Tuesday, 10th to Thursday, 12th May with the option of an extra night on 9th May ahead of the main trip.  Although prompted, she did not want to reveal the destination yet.  We are waiting with bated breath!

Also the President reminded everyone that Presidents Day will be on 7th October with the prize giving at the Dinner on Saturday, 10th October. Details are on the website and Notice Board in the Club.

Finally, Richard reminded the membership that there is an Anniversary Tournament to celebrate 20 years of Bonalba Golf on Saturday, 19th September. Entry lists are in the Pro-Shop. There will be a morning and afternoon shot-gun start with prize giving at the party in the evening.  On this occasion, Non-Federated players are very welcome.

We had two guests today, playing Individual Stableford and David Payne won the guest prize.

Summarising the results:
Nearest the pins:
Hole 4             Greta Biersteker
Hole 8             Jim Hurley
Hole 11           Greta Biersteker
Hole 14           Roger Hunger

The twos today came from Greta on holes 4 and 8 and from Jim on hole 8. As is custom, they receive a golf ball for each hole birdied, so Greta is not only stocking up her wine cellar but also replenishes her golf ball reservoir.

As for the main competition results:
5th place with a net 76 off 25 hcp, Angel Centenera
4th place with a net 73 off 16 hcp, Edi Rogers
3rd place with a net 72 off 8 hcp, Greta Biersteker
2nd place with a net 71 off 18 hcp, Stan Tarabula
1st place with a net 68 off 23 hcp, Alan Perry

2015: Monthly Medal (5.8.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 5th August 2015

Today we played our Monthly Medal competition.  Many of our members preferred to go to the beach or to other locations to seek relief from the heat, so we had a depleted field to compete for the medal.  John came in with a fantastic score of 39 points.  The conditions obviously suited him, more so as he was walking the course rather than go by buggy which was the preferred way of playing by many of us.  The results showed quite a big gap between the scores net 70+ and 80+ of 5 shots.  So there was a definite “them” of the first seven and the rest of “us”.  In fact a pack of 4 chased the winner, all with a net score of 35.  Again, as there were less than 28 members competing, only three prizes were given.  Sorry, Richard and Michael!

We welcomed one guest today, Yves, a friend of the Leroux family, who, to nobody’s surprise, won the guest prize.

Summarising the results:

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4             Ken Roles
Hole 8             Richard Davis
Hole 11           Jean-Paul Leroux
Hole 14           nobody

Hole 8 had the magic touch, as it posted 3 twos, by Richard Davis, Graham Sutton and Chris van Bemmelen.  They all receive the customary golf ball.

As for the main competition results:
5th place with a net 73 off 9 hcp, Richard Davis
4th place with a net 73 off 11 hcp, Michael Davison with a better back 9
3rd place with a net 73 off 20 hcp, Jan Boultbee, beating Michael on the back 9
2nd place with a net 73 off 22 hcp, Graham Sutton, again with a better back 9
1st place with a net 69 off 12 hcp, John Garnett

2015: Monthly Medal (1.7.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 1st July 2015
Today 28 members turned up to play the Monthly Medal. Temperatures were expected to rise to the mid 30’s, so we were bracing ourselves for not only having to play out each hole but also dealing with the unusually hot weather.

Congratulations to our resident artist, Stephen Grey, for an excellent win. Not surprisingly, he also scooped the special prize of best score on all par three’s with 13 points, one under gross and although he was not nearest the pin on any of the par 3's, he managed to shoot a birdie on the 14th. Also in good form recently is Keith Preston, one of our founder members.  He came second last week and again this week.  Come on Keith, you can do it !

As usual, we were having a lunch after medal play.  We stayed on at the Bonalba Club Restaurant. There was a good turn out for the lunch.  Some 30 members and guests enjoyed the BBQ which was a nice change from the normal menu del día.

Summarising the results:

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4             Angel Centenera
Hole 8             Rob Ritchie
Hole 11           Jean-Paul Leroux
Hole 14           Dennis Pyman

2015: Monthly Medal (3.6.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 3 June 2015

A beautiful sunny June morning greeted us as 31 of our members assembled at Bonalba to play our Monthly Medal Competition.  We also welcomed a guest, Derek Morton, who was a founder member of the Costa Blanca Golf Society, together with Manolo Garay, some 20 years ago.

The course is in good condition and part of the maintenance program is the hollow-tining next week.

Looking at the winners, it was good to see that they came from players with a wide cross section of handicaps. Congratulations go to Helmut for an excellent win, especially when his handicap had been cut by one stroke from his previous win.

Summarising the results:

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4             Michael Davison
Hole 8             Santi Hung
Hole 11           Helmut Treiber
Hole 14           Dennis Pyman

2015: Monthly Medal (6.5.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 6 May 2015

Today we had 29 members competing for the May Medal.  Members who have been away for a while and have returned recently, remarked on the excellent condition of the course and the greens. So with that and the very pleasant temperatures, maybe we could have expected someone coming in with under par. Maybe someone with a higher handicap could have taken advantage of these favourable conditions.  However, it was the day of the low handicappers.  Well done to all the winners! And a special mention to Dennis Pyman, who had an eagle on hole 5!
In previous years, the winner of the medal would not receive a prize on the day as the Medal presentation was at the end of the year. Following on from last year, our new sponsor for a prize on the day is Michael Davison and his wife Heather.  Thank you for that, Michael and Heather. Richard had a big smile on his face when we received his bottle of Limoncella.

And here is a spot-the-ball puzzle: thanks to Pierre who drove the ball and Santi who took the picture.

After golf, we had our Medal Lunch at the Bonalba Restaurant.  Our Captain had arranged for a tapas style meal rather than the usual Menu del Día. It was a welcome change and we thoroughly enjoyed a good variety of dishes.

There were two special prizes for longest drives and the winners were:
Hcp up to 20 - Richard Davis
Hcp 21+        - Gordon Burton

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4           Stan Tarabula
Hole 8           Stan Tarabula
Hole 11         Richard Davis
Hole 14         Jan Boultbee

There were two 2’s today, from Stan Tarabula, who had the run of the short par 3’s today, and Richard Davis, both on hole 8. They receive the customary golf ball.

The main competition results were:

4th place with a net 74 off 18 hcp, James Burnet
3rd place with a net 74 off 11 hcp, John Garnett
2nd place with a net 73 off 6 hcp, Dennis Pyman
1st place with net 72 off 9 hcp, Richard Davis

2015: Monthly Medal (1.4.)

We arrived on a beautiful sunny morning to play our monthly medal to be advised we were all starting today off the 10th tee. As it was the 1st April some of us were suspicious this was an April Fools joke but it wasn´t and the early groups quickly discovered that not only were the greens much slower but the early morning dew had not been taken off either, making putting extremely difficult. This was reflected in the scoring with only 3 players playing to par, Unluckily Luc Verhaegen and John Garnett just missed out on winning the coveted medal losing out on countback to Michael Davison. Michael is playing really well and carrying on where he left off last year going further ahead in the Consistency Chart. New member Roger Hunger was in with a good chance of winning his first medal but finished with a 10, OUCH!

We had 25 members playing today and 2 guests.

2015: Monthly Medal (4.3.)

Venue:  Bonalba Golf & Spa, 4 March  2015

Time is flying when you are having fun playing golf as the Monthly Medal competition was here again.  There was a full turnout of 36 players and this is to remind players to put their names down on the “tee-times list” on the board as early as they can to enable the Captain to try and negotiate extra tee times if required.

The morning started with very misty conditions, reminiscent of the foggy conditions all too often experienced back in the UK. Luckily, the mist cleared later giving us more pleasant conditions of no wind , some sun and reasonable temperatures.  However, the pleasant conditions did not seem to help with our scores today.  The difference between the winner’s and the runner up scores was unusually large. In fact, the overall results were remarkably high for no obvious reasons, making the course play 4 times more difficult than standard and the computer handicap adjustment called for “RO” (reduction only).  Congratulations go to the winner, Gay Brooks, one of our newer members and the only one who bucked the trend.

Our Monthly Medal Lunch this time was at the Thai Restaurant in San Juan, always a popular choice.

The guest prize was won by Roger Hunger, who has now joined the Society as a member.

1st place with a net score 71 off 19 hcp, Gay Brooks

2015: Monthly Medal (11.2.)

Today we had 30 members, which is good for February, competing for the prestigious monthly medal. They were joined by 7 guests so we had a great turnout considering the cold and windy weather we are experiencing. Our ex Captain Graham has gone to a health farm in England to recover from his year but new Captain Angel played his first round for some time and tempted us with some additional longest drives today combined with the usual 4 nearest the pins.

Greta had a great day but then her best friend Dieck won the guest prize! They were heard celebrating way into the night.
The winner of the Bill Williams Away Day Shield 2014 was unable to be at the recent Presentation Evening so sponsor Bill Williams presented the prizes to Jan Boultbee. He was particularly pleased to present it to one of our newer members but more so that Jan was the first Lady Winner, many congratulations.

We are delighted to welcome 3 new members to the society, John and Gay Brooks, and Alan Perry. They have played as guests recently and we hope that you will welcome them warmly.

2015: Monthly Medal (7.1.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 7 January  2015

After the Christmas holiday season, we were ready to start the new year with our Monthly Medal competition.  There was a good turn out of 32 members and 2 guests.  We were all wrapped up well as we started the round in “near artic” conditions, or so it seemed, especially when coming round the corner of the first hole where there is always a wind blowing.  Luckily it warmed up later on.  Congratulations go to all the winners who came in with very good results considering the conditoions.  There were also some good results for nearest to pin, four birdies, and three of them were achieved by players who were in fact not the nearest.  It was good to see two of our newer members in the prizes.  Luc Verhaegen coming third in the medal and his wife Marleen getting nearest to the pin on hole 4.

We welcomed back our guests John and  Ann Brook who finished the round on equal scores and now doubt  will share the guest prize of a bottle of wine..
