2015: Team Game (23.12.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 23rd December 2015

Two days before Christmas and there were not so many of us who checked in this morning for a game of golf. Our Captain had gone to Madrid and our Vice-Captain is in the UK until mid January. So it was up to our Ex-Captain Graham to arrange today’s competition.  We played a team game which consisted of the three best scores.  Again, the weather did not let us down insomuch as the sun came out about mid-morning and again we finished our round in nice warm weather und enjoyed sitting on the terrace in glorious sunshine while waiting for the prize giving.

Please note that next Wednesday, 30 December will be a casual competition and for any queries please contact Michael Davison.

The results were as follows:

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4              Edi Rogers
Hole 8             Marie-Jo beating her husband by a couple of inches
Hole 11           Nobody reached the green, so this bottle of wine was raffled and James Burnet was the lucky winner.
Hole 14           Nino Andres Aloras

There were no twos on this occasion.

There was a tie for first place with 108 points but the winning team was:
Stan Tarabula, Nino Andres Aloras, Pierre Lesot and his wife Marie-Jo as “ghost”
who beat Michael Davison, Christiane Tarabula, Edi Rogers and Keith Preston with a better back 9.

2015: Team Game (11.11.)

A Motley Crew :)
Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 11th November 2015

With the flu claiming more “victims”, amongst them our Captain, we had 29 members and 3 guests competing in a team game. This was announced as a “Mystery Team Game” where all team members played Individual Stableford but nobody knew which scores were taken into consideration.  At prize giving all was revealed, in fact the two middles scores of each team were counted. So it was somewhat bad luck for the teams of Jean-Paul Leroux, Michael Davison and John Garnett who all scored points above 36 and whose scores were not counted. But well done to Richard’s team who came second despite Richard’s score of 37 being discounted.  Congratulations to the winning team who included Nino and Ricky, playing as guests today but who will join our Society shortly.
There were also two special prizes for the best male and female player, sponsored by our absent Captain.  Angel, we wish you a speedy recovery!

After the prize giving, the Vice Captain handed out an information sheet with details of her Away Trip next year in May.  This trip has been organised well in advance to give everyone the opportunity to make suitable arrangements. The details can also be seen on the website under “Announcements”.

2015: Team Game Yellow Ball (21.10.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa

This Wednesday our Captain had decided on a team game.  Luckily the rain had stopped in time for the competition.  However, the course was still very wet and buggies were only allowed on the pathways.

The team game consisted of the three best Stableford scores with the added introduction of the proverbial “yellow ball” which was played by each team member consecutively.  It counted as double points and had to be included in the three scores.  Needless to say, we all felt that extra pressure when it was our turn to play the “yellow ball”.  Even par was 144 points but nobody managed to reach this score.

As with all team games there are only two main prizes. So commiserations to Richard, Luc, Graham and his guest Andre who came third,

Summarising the results:

2015: Team Game & Indiv. Stableford (30.9.)

The winning team
Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 30th September 2015

Today was the birthday of our Captain Angel and he sponsored a number of extra prizes. We played a team game of three best scores but there were also prizes for the best five individual scores.  In addition we were competing for various other prizes thanks to the generosity of our Captain.  Again we had a very good turnout of 41 members and 6 guests and luckily we were able to start from tees 1 and 10 to cut down the waiting time to prize giving.

But please note that the course will be very busy in October and we will not get additional tee-times to the ones already booked.  So make sure your name is on the list to ensure that you get a game as the allocation will be on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Congratulations go the winning team for an excellent score of 6 points better than par! On the individual scoring, Eddie is the man of the moment, being in the prizes week after week.  And finally, we need to mention the longest drive for the men. We were all  marvelling at the enormous drive from Brian who managed to get past the very impressive 265 m drive from “Big Jeff”.

There was an error at the prize giving as Gay actually came 6th and James was 4th. Apologies to both!

Just to remind everyone that next Wednesday will be Presidents Day and the prizes will be presented at the Dinner on Saturday, 10 October.  Please note: to be eligible for a prize, you are expected to attend the Dinner.

2015: Texas Scramble (19.8.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 19th August 2015

This Wednesday a team game was on the agenda.  Our Captain decided on Texas Scramble.  We had six teams and our guests played as part of them.  The first team out was a family affair.  They were the “Pros”, Dennis, his son Iain, the actual pro, and Dennis’ young grandson Thomas who, by the looks of it, might well step into his father’s footsteps one day.  Although they were not part of the main competition, Thomas collected a special prize for his team who came in with a gross of 64.
Congratulations to the amateur winning team for an excellent result of 60.4 net and also to Luc Verhaegen who has been in good form lately and showing it again this week by getting nearest the pin on both of the long par 3’s.
As this was a team competition, there is no change in the Consistency Chart.

1st place with a net 60.4, Edi Rogers, Doris Shearman-Earp, Pascale Leroux and guest Charly.

2015: Three Best Results

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 17 June 2015

Today we played a team game which consisted of the three best Stableford scores on each hole.  In addition, our Captain sponsored two extra prizes, for the best individual results men and women.  Was it that everyone was more relaxed about their game as only three scores counted or was it that after the hollow-tining and the recent rain the course was in excellent condition? Whichever reason, there were a good number of outstanding individual scores being achieved and the three players coming in with 38 points must have all fancied winning the individual prize, but Edi who is in remarkable form after his recent operation, spoiled the party by winning with 39 points.  Well done, Edi and commiseration to Richard, Luc and Graham!

Consequently, the team scores were also outstanding with the winning and second team scoring 10 and 8 points over par.  But with all that good scoring going on, why did nobody manage to get onto the green on hole 11?

Altough this was primarily a team game, all individual scores were recorded and therefore it qualified for handicap adjustment and Consistency Chart.

Summarising the results:

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4             Jan Boultbee
Hole 8             John Garnett
Hole 11           nobody
Hole 14           Gordon Burton

There was one two today, from Chris van Bemmelen on hole 4.  He receives the customary golf ball.

The best individual results were:
Edi Rogers with 39 points off 17 hcp
Kate Hurley with 34 points off 23 hcp

The team competition results were:
2nd place with 116 points, Michael Davison, Jan Boultbee, John Brooks, Keith Preston (ghost)
1st place with 118 points, Edi Rogers, Guy Letort, Stephen Grey, Gordon Burton

2015: Team Game Yellow Ball (20.5.)

Venue: Bonalba Golf & Spa, 20 May 2015
Today we had to turn up earlier than usual as the Golf Club had to accommodate a large outside Society who played after us. We were 28 members and one guest ready to play a team game.  The competition consisted of the three best results which in itself would have been a nice relaxing game, but to give it a further dimension, our Captain decided to also play a “yellow ball”.  This ball was allocated to the 4 members of the team consecutively and giving us some extra stress as the “yellow ball” counted double and had to be included in the three best scores.  Nobody was able to achieve level par of 144, but congratulations go to the winners and runners up, both scoring equal points.

As this was a team game, the Consistency Chart remains the same from last week.

During this week there was also one of the Doubles Knock-out Matches being played.  Bob Crow and Karine Sienaert eventually got the better of Jan Boultbee and Doris Shearman-Earp after seven (!) extra holes.

Summarising of the results:

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4           Dave Davies
Hole 8           Santi Hung
Hole 11         Michael Davison
Hole 14         Gay Brooks

There were also three 2’s, Santi Hung on hole 8 and John Garnett and Jean-Jacques Lavergne both on hole 11. They receive the customary golf ball.

The main competition results were:
2nd place with 141 points, Roger Hunger, Santi Hung, Gordon Burton and Stan Tarabula who was their “ghost”.
1st place with 141 points, John Garnett, Chris van Bemmelen, Stephen Grey, Luc Verhaegen, who had a better result on the back 9.

2015: Texas Scramble (15.4.)

Today we played our first team game in April and our Captain chose a Texas Scramble which can be quite relaxing and enjoyable unless you are not driving well! We had 8 teams competing, 7 teams of 4 players with a minimum of 4 drives each and 1 team of 3 with a minimum of 5 drives each.
For the first time in weeks the wind dropped but then we had the rain and those at the back of the field caught the heaviest downpours.
The team of 3 are generally at a disadvantage in Texas Scramble games but as you can see from the photo that was not the case today with the dream team of Edi, Roger and Jean Jacques blending perfectly with a gross score of 68 (4 under par) to win by a substantial margin.
The full results were;

Our Captain Angel reminded all the members present that Neville is celebrating his 80th birthday next weekend and to mark the occasion we will be having a special lunch after next week´s game which we hope as many members and guests as possible will attend.
Many congratulations to all this weeks winners.

2015:Team Game (25.3.)

After the cold windy day at Villaitana last week we thought we´d escaped the wintry conditions however we all turned up fully waterproofed for what was forecast to be the wettest day of the year. Fortunately the heavy rain didn´t materialise and the back 9 was played in pleasant conditions. The recent rains have done wonders for the course though and it is now much greener and lush.
Our Captain, Angel had arranged a version of the Yellow Ball team game with alternate double scores for one player on each hole. Despite some very clear instructions this proved too much for some of our members who have just got used to the stableford system! Anyway as usual we enjoyed the competitive team spirit and some very good scores were posted.
We had 7 teams of 4 competing including 2 guests John and Anne Brook.

The Captain expressed his concern that some members were still not entering their names on the competition lists. It´s not difficult to walk down the stairs and write your name on the lists for the next month therefore please make the effort and support your Captain! On a final note we´ve all noticed the absence of our Laughing Dutchman Chris Van Bemmelen. He´s playing Floris Nightingale to his wife Lillian who is recovering from major surgery. We all wish Lillian a speedy recovery and on your behalf we have sent her a bunch of flowers to remind them they are in all our thoughts.

2015: Team Game - 2, 3, 4 best results (25.2.)

Diamond Pattern Golf Jumpers ARE IN

Venue:  Bonalba Golf & Spa, 25 February  2015
There was a good turn-out of 36 players for today’s competition. After playing singles competitions for the last two weeks, our Captain had decided on a team game. Although it was still the individual score that counted, players could relax somehow as only two scores counted on par 5 holes and 3 scores on par 4 holes. However, the par 3’s were still slightly more stressful as all 4 scores counted.  Par was 108, so congratulations to the winning team who beat the par score and also well done to the runners up who were only one under par.  Both very good scores, especially in yet again blustery conditions. Looking at the players in both teams, who said that husband and wife cannot play golf together in one team?! This does obviously not apply to the happy couples Stan and Christiane and John and Jan!

The Consistency Chart stays the same, as this was not classed as an individual competition.

We hope that our two guests enjoyed playing with our Society. On this occasion, as we played a team game, they were included in the teams and did not play for a guest prize,

Nearest the pins:
Hole 4            Dennis Pyman
Hole 8            Dennis Pyman

Unusually, on this occasion nobody scored a birdie on any of the par 3's.

The main competition results were:
1st place with a score of 109 points, John Garnett, Jan Boultbee, John Brooks, Peter van der Mee

2nd place with a score of 107 points, Michael Davison, James Burnet, Stan and Christiane Tarabula

2015: Captain's Drive In - Team Game (4.2.)

The President with the winning team  (no Rudy)

Venue : Bonalba Golf &Spa, Wednesday, 4 February 2015.

Today we had the Drive-in of our newly elected Captain, Angel Centenera. We all had at bet as to where his drive was going to land. The lucky winner was Jean-Jacques Lavergne who guessed correctly and won the jackpot. We then proceeded to play the competition. To mark the occasion, our new Captain had decided to give out more than the usual amount of prizes.  There were prizes for the team event which was the three best scores on each hole. There were also prizes for the best individual Stableford scores for men and women and second shots onto two par 4 holes  as well as the usual nearest to pins. Greta was the star winner with 3 wins, the Individual prize,  nearest to pin and a birdie and her team coming first.  Graham, our outgoing Captain also played well, winning the men’s Individual.  Obviously, all the hard work that goes with a Captaincy is now behind him and he can give his full attention to just playing golf again.

There was an excellent turn-out of 41 members and guests and we all thoroughly enjoyed the game, especially as we were spurned on by an excellent half-way house.  Many thanks to Hazel, Rose, Heather, Christiane and Sandra for looking after our well-being by giving up their time and providing us with delicious home-cooked food and drinks.  It was very much appreciated, especially also the hot drinks on this cold and windy day. The Captain gave a special thanks to the ladies as they had provided everything out of their own pocket and would not let him contribute to anything at all.

Before the prize giving, the Captain reminded everyone, if at all possible,  to put their names down on the sheets pinned up on the Club Notice Board if they want to play the following week or weeks. Also, if there are any cancellations to be made, to notify him as soon as possible.

After the prize giving, the members and guests sat down to a very enjoyable lunch at the Bonalba Golf Club restaurant..  All in all a wonderful day.  Thank you Angel and your helpers for organising it and we wish you all the best for your year of Captaincy!

2015: Texas Scramble (28.1.)

Venue:  Bonalba Golf & Spa, 21 January  2015

Today was the last competition organized by our Captain Graham Sutton. His year of Captaincy has come to end. Thank you, Graham, for all your hard work to make it an enjoyable year of golf for everyone!  You were a great Captain!  Now you can relax and concentrate on your golf again!

On the agenda today was Texas Scramble. There was a maximum turnout of 47 players including guests who were playing as part of the teams and they all took part in the winning teams.  The weather, again, was kind to us with temperatures warming up nicely after a cold start.

After golf we held our AGM and welcomed our new President, Neville Woodfine and new Captain, Angel Centenera. The proposal under discussion was for the over 75’s driving off the red tees. The motion passed will be published separately, for the information of all members.

The final event for the outgoing Captain is the Presentation Dinner on 31 January at La Cova when the yearly prizes will be presented.
